I have a headache, what should I do?

What to do if you have a headache? Many people blame the changeable weather. Meanwhile, temperature changes themselves, as well as atmospheric pressure, have nothing to do with it. Heat – yes! This is especially true for hypertensive patients. The cause of such headaches is dehydration. And, in addition, the head can hurt from hunger and even from a bad mood. Moreover, most often, with such headaches, medications do not help. So, let’s start in order.
Let’s start, of course, with the heat, which has now set in practically the entire territory of Ukraine.
Scientists have proven that with an increase in air temperature by 5 °C, the frequency of headache development increases by 7.5 percent. As noted above, headaches can be caused by dehydration of the body, as a result of which the blood supply to the brain worsens. This, by the way, is the cause of fainting. What to do if you have a headache? – Avoid dehydration – drink at least 2 liters of water a day.
In addition, in hot weather, our blood vessels dilate, which activates the trigeminal nerve. That is why people prone to migraines experience particularly severe pain.
Another cause of headaches in the absence of a predisposition to chronic diseases can be elementary hunger. This is especially true for those who are losing weight. Our brain constantly needs glucose. Feeling its lack, the brain persistently signals us about it, and not always “directly”, sometimes through a headache. What to do? Drink tea with sugar or eat something sweet. Of course, this method only temporarily eliminates the pain, since the glucose level, having risen sharply, will fall just as sharply.
In addition, to eliminate such headaches, you need a full-fledged diet with an emphasis on foods with a low glycemic index. These are cereals, whole grain bread, protein products, milk, fruits and vegetables.
The next non-chronic cause of headaches, most often lasting for several weeks and not relieved by medication, are depressive disorders. I note that in addition to the head in this condition, the heart can also hurt. The main cause of such pain is a decrease in the amount of serotonin. Only antidepressants will help to cope with the pain in this case – painkillers are simply ineffective here. Of course, antidepressants should be taken only as prescribed by a doctor.
At the end of the post, I will give the official qualification of headaches:
- Tension headache;
- Migraine;
- Sinus headache;
- Cluster headache.
